Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs)

Doping is the occurrence of one or more Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) set out in Article 2 of the World Anti-Doping Code. A positive test is only one type of ADRV.

Presence

A prohibited substance (or its metabolites/markers) is found in an athlete’s sample.

Example
A urine or blood sample contains a prohibited substance or its markers.

Use or Attempted Use

Using or attempting to use a prohibited substance or prohibited method.

Example
The athlete admits using a prohibited method even if no positive test occurs.

Evasion, Refusal or Failure to Submit

Evading, refusing, or failing to submit to sample collection.

Example
After notification, the athlete refuses to provide a sample without valid justification.

Whereabouts Failures

For RTP athletes: a combination of missed tests and/or filing failures within 12 months.

Example
Three combined missed tests/filing failures within a 12-month period.

Tampering

Tampering or attempting to tamper with any part of doping control.

Example
Interfering with sample collection or documentation to affect the process.

Possession

Possession of a prohibited substance or prohibited method (subject to Code conditions).

Example
Prohibited substances are found without a legitimate reason.

Trafficking

Trafficking or attempted trafficking of a prohibited substance or prohibited method.

Example
A person supplies prohibited substances to athletes.

Administration

Administering or attempting to administer a prohibited substance or method to any athlete.

Example
A support person provides a prohibited substance to an athlete.

Complicity

Assisting or other intentional involvement in an ADRV (including covering up).

Example
Helping to organise doping or hiding evidence.

Prohibited Association

Sport-related association with a sanctioned person (where applicable under the Code).

Example
Continuing to work with a sanctioned support person where the Code conditions apply.

Discouraging Reporting or Retaliation

Discouraging reporting to authorities or retaliating against those who report.

Example
Threatening or penalising someone for reporting suspected doping.
