The Testing Process

Athletes may be tested any time, any place, In-Competition or Out-of-Competition. Testing is conducted in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Standard for Testing (IST), and is generally carried out with no advance notice.

1
Notification
You will be notified by authorised Sample Collection Personnel (SCP) (e.g. DCO or Chaperone). Identification will be shown, your rights explained, and notification acknowledged on the Doping Control Form (paper or secure digital system).
2
Reporting & Supervision
From notification until completion, you must remain under continuous supervision. You are required to report immediately to the Doping Control Station (DCS), unless a permitted delay is approved.
3
Selection of Equipment
You may choose sealed sample collection equipment and check that it is intact and untampered. Verify that codes match the documentation where applicable.
4
Sample Provision
Urine samples are provided under direct observation by a same-gender Sample Collection Person.
Blood samples are collected by a qualified BCO and may include venous blood or Dried Blood Spot (DBS).
5
Splitting & Sealing
For urine samples, the sample is divided into A and B bottles. You will verify seals and confirm sample codes before sealing.
6
Documentation
Review and complete the Doping Control Form (DCF), including declaring medications and supplements. Verify accuracy before signing.
7
Transport & Results
Samples are securely transported to a WADA-accredited laboratory. Results are managed through the applicable results management process under the World Anti-Doping Code.

Athlete Responsibilities During Testing

During the doping control process, athletes have specific responsibilities to ensure that sample collection is conducted fairly, securely, and in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Standard for Testing (IST).

Remain under observation at all times
From the moment of notification until the completion of the doping control process, you must remain under the continuous observation of authorised Doping Control Officers (DCOs) or Chaperones. This ensures the integrity and security of the sample collection process.
Provide photo identification
You may be required to present a valid photo identification document to confirm your identity during notification or at the Doping Control Station.
Comply with sample collection procedures
You are required to follow all established sample collection procedures, including instructions given by Sample Collection Personnel, checking equipment, providing samples correctly, and completing documentation accurately.
Report immediately to the Doping Control Station
After notification, you must report immediately to the Doping Control Station (DCS), unless a permitted delay has been approved by the DCO.
Important reminder: Failure to comply with these responsibilities, including refusal or evasion, may constitute an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the World Anti-Doping Code.

Permitted Delay in Reporting

After notification for doping control, athletes must report immediately to the Doping Control Station (DCS), unless a permitted delay is approved and documented by the Doping Control Officer (DCO).

Medal ceremony or media commitments
Athletes may request a delay to attend a medal presentation ceremony or official media sessions related to the competition.
Completion of an activity already in progress
Athletes may complete a competition or activity that was already in progress at the time of notification (e.g. warm down or cool down), subject to approval.
Representative, interpreter or additional information
Athletes may request time to locate a representative, escort or interpreter, or to seek clarification about the doping control procedure.
Adaptations for para athletes
Athletes with impairments may request approved adaptations to ensure the testing process is conducted appropriately and respectfully.
Other exceptional circumstances
Any unforeseen or exceptional circumstances may be considered, but must first receive approval from the DCO and be properly documented.
Important: All delays are subject to approval and supervision by the DCO. Unauthorised delay or failure to report may constitute an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).
